Okinawa

Located in the southernmost part of Japan, Okinawa Prefecture is made up of beautiful subtropical islands surrounded by crystal-clear waters and blessed with a warm climate and abundant natural resources. Its unique environment has given rise to a distinctive food and drink culture unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Okinawa is best known for awamori, a traditional distilled spirit with a history dating back centuries. Made from long-grain indica rice and fermented with black koji, awamori has a rich aroma and distinctive character. Some varieties are aged for many years, developing deeper and more complex flavors over time. Awamori is an important part of Okinawan culture and is traditionally enjoyed alongside the region’s flavorful cuisine.

Okinawa is also known for its tropical ingredients, including Okinawan brown sugar, pineapple and shikuwasa citrus, which add unique flavors to the local food and drink culture.

With its subtropical climate, island traditions and distinctive brewing heritage, Okinawa offers a unique expression of Japan’s diverse drinking culture, with awamori at its heart.
